About the Role:

Reporting to the VP Finance, Compliance and CFO, the Director, Financial Control is a results-driven and confident individual able to manage and improve our organization's financial performance and direct / optimize our finance operations. Duties will include managing accounting records, evaluating and managing risk, ensuring compliance with regulations, publishing financial statements, overseeing accounting operations, analyzing financial data, monitoring expenditure, coordinating auditing processes, and ensuring accuracy of financial information.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Ensure ongoing effective positioning and integration of the Finance function with the rest of the organization to create and sustain FA’s success.
  • Ensure the integrity of organization’s financial data and financial records are complete, accurate and timely maintained through the development, implementation and review of appropriate standards, policies, procedures and controls.
  • Ensure that monthly reports and metrics are published on time, accurate and relevant. Work with other areas across the organization to analyze results and identify trends to senior management.
  • Prepare Audit and Risk Committee reports on financial and any other information and present financial results to the Senior Leadership Team and the Committee.
  • Develop, implement and review the organizations annual budget and report on progress, including analyzing results and variances, providing interpretation and possible options, and advising management on opportunities and risks.
  • Enable internal and external support for key financial systems and databases and review opportunities to leverage technology (e.g. SharePoint, Tableau) to automate manual processes within the department.
  • Collaborate with other departments to leverage changes and communicate impact to Finance.
  • Define, monitor and establish compliance to the liquidity policy to optimise investment results and determine member distributions, in conjunction with various departments.
  • Support and manage the Accounting Committee (comprising of senior industry personnel) requirements and ensure work plans reflect the mandate. Drive the agenda and input required from the Committee to support FA’s goals.
  • Lead direct reports (managers) and staff in executing the financial operations.
  • Manage the external audit process and oversee execution.
  • Regularly review internal processes for efficiencies and opportunities to leverage information from other areas – champion Continuous Improvement practices.
  • Track and educate team and organisation on emerging industry issues impacting finances and best practices relating to finance functions. Lead the department in implementing the changes.
  • Oversee the CSAE 3416 process within finance and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Attract, hire and retain a team of high-performing managers and professionals who possess outstanding knowledge, experience ethics and integrity.
  • Establish and assign departmental goals to team members and evaluate their performance.
  • Responsible for coaching, mentoring, and developing career paths for direct reports.
  • Any other duties or projects as assigned.

Key Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10-12 years of related work experience with a least 3 years in a Leadership or equivalent role
  • Professional degree in Accounting and Finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Experience in Property and Casualty insurance in Canada
